Description

The uniform includes the Mess Dress jacket, the white pique vest, and the black dress trousers, with miniature medals and decorations. The jacket is named to 'Edward A. Dinges', with the sleeve cuffs carrying the bullion rank stars of a Major General. The uniform shows relatively light wear, and it is in excellent condition. General Dinges was born in 1931. Originally from Newburgh, N.Y., General Dinges graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1953. In addition to his posts at Fort Sill and in Europe, Dinges served in Vietnam as a field artillery battalion commander and plans officer for the U.S. Military Assistance Command. From 1975 to 1978, he was assigned to the Third Armored Division Artillery in Europe, where he held successive posts as division artillery commander, chief of staff, and assistant division commander and as commander of the Giessen Military Community. Among his awards and decorations were the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star medal with oak leaf cluster, the Army Commendation Medal and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification badge. General Dinges died in 1990.
