Description
You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of an early 20th century German Civilian Pocket Watch dating to the World War I era. This watch represents a typical private-purchase timepiece of the period.German civilian pocket watches from this era were produced in large numbers and reflect the high level of watchmaking craftsmanship present in Germany and neighboring European countries at the time. Many employed Swiss- or German-made movements housed in continental silver cases, marked to .800 silver standard, and were sold through jewelers rather than issued through military channels. Floral-engraved cases and enamel dials with Roman numerals were typical stylistic elements of the period.Made of Silver, brass, and steel, this pocket watch is in VERY NICE condition! The case is marked .800 silver with the German crescent moon and crown hallmark. The inner dust cover is marked 'METAL,' indicating a base-metal inner cover, which is correct for period construction and does not contradict the silver outer case. The movement is marked 'GT' in an oval with a patent stamp, consistent with European manufacture of this period. The dial is original and shows staining and a visible crack. The crystal is heavily fogged and scratched, which exaggerates the appearance of dial wear in photographs. The hands and movement appear original to this watch. The chain is base metal and was likely added post-period. A VERY NICE addition to any collection of display!
