Japanese WWII Shin-Gunto Katana Samurai Sword-This has a gilded copper habaki, (crossguard) has great copper like finish and is very well decorated with small chrysanthemums. The details are excellent. The pommel cap is also in very good condition. The handle is made of imitation white sharkskin, which is wrapped in a matte gold silk wrapping or tsuka-ito. This does show some fraying. The Nakago has a single meguki-ana which features a 7-character kanji that translates to the 'Nosh Seki ju Kanenobu saku' (Made by Kanenobu, resident of Seki City in Noshu Province).I had to look this up to figure out where this mark is, so let me explain for those of you who aren't Japanese sword experts. The nakago is the tang, the hidden part of a Japanese sword's blade that extends into the handle (tsuka), while the mekugi-ana is the small hole drilled through the nakago, allowing a bamboo peg (mekugi) to pass through and securely lock the blade to the handle, ensuring stability and allowing for disassembly. This means the marking is not visible, which is usual for Japanese swords. The release button for the blade works as it should. The scabbard is finished in an olive-green paint, with beautiful copper-colored fittings. The blade is gorgeous, take a look at the wavy irregular hamon or temper line. This sword measures 39 inches total, with a blade that measures just over 27 inches (99.06cm) (70.1675 cm) By the way, Kaneobu, the swordsmith's family has been making swords for over 600 years, and they are still in business today. Father and son were well known for working the forge during WW2 and produced many swords for the military.It would be a fun research project.
