US Civil War M1860 Cavalry Sword-This sword is a monster. This is a very large heavy sword, which is ironic because this is called a 'Light Cavalry Saber. This was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, MA. This company was a major supplier of Civil War swords for the Union, producing popular models like the M1860 Light Cavalry Saber and officer's swords. This has brass hilt and crossguard. The handle is covered in brown leather with a twisted wire grip wrap. Some of the wire has been lost and someone has replaced it with a black wire. Please see photos. The fittings retain the beautiful bronze tone. The handle grip shows moderate wear and leather loss, mostly to the reverse. The scabbard has lost the majority of its finish. This blade is curved, but is very long, measuring approx. 40 inches (101.6cm) overall. The blade looks good, and is very nicely marked for the 'AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE, MASS.' stamp on the blade's ricasso and inspector marks 'US/G.W.C./1864' on the reverse of the blade. This is a very cool old sword. We rarely get civil war swords, and they are fun to see.Online checkout is not supported for edged weapons.
