Description

You are bidding on an EXCELLENT and VERY RARE example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe AFN1 AnzeigergerƤt für Funknavigation (Radio Navigation Indicator), Ln. 27000! Manufactured by AEG, this example is a factory-marked FlaK variant, indicating that it was most likely used for targeting purposes, such as in conjunction with the Würzburg Radar system! The AFN 1 was a radio homing indicator designed to display directional guidance information received from radio navigation systems. While commonly associated with Luftwaffe aircraft applications, this example features factory dial markings indicating Flak use, suggesting it was produced specifically for anti-aircraft applications rather than standard cockpit installation. Instruments of this type were part of radio-based direction and guidance systems used to assist Flak units in aircraft detection and tracking roles during the war.Several versions of the basic Würzburg system were deployed over the course of the war. The first, Würzburg A, was operated manually and required the operators to pinpoint the target by maintaining a maximum signal on their oscilloscope display. Since the signal strength changed on its own for various reasons as well as being on or off target, this was inaccurate and generally required the use of a searchlight to spot the target once the radar had settled on an approximate position. Nevertheless, one of the first Würzburgs in service directly assisted in the shooting-down of an aircraft in May 1940 by orally relaying commands to a flak unit. An experimental Würzburg B added an infra-red detector for fine tuning, but in general these devices proved to be unusable and production was discontinued.German flak units primarily used the Würzburg radar (FuMG 62), especially the larger Würzburg-Riese, for tracking and directing fire, often in conjunction with the KommandogerƤt optical predictor and searchlights for night engagements, though its effectiveness was challenged by Allied chaff (Window). Other systems like the Freya were used for early warning. AA gunners of the time referred to the Würzburg set as FuMG (Flak) 40T/A.Made of aluminum and bakelite, this item is in EXCELLENT used conditoin! SOme slight marks and wear, due to the age, but nothing that detracts. The dial face is clear and legible with original factory markings intact, including Both the LuftwaffeLn. 27000part number, and a RARE 'L FlaK 2' designation. The rear of the unit displays an Army acceptance stamp, supporting non–Luftwaffe-specific procurement. Electrical connector and mounting features are present as shown (no plug, however). I have not been able to find any photos where of the Radar System it would have been mounted in, so I have shown the location of the standard AFN1 in the last images. Would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
