Description
The tunic is the very scarce style for U.S. Navy aviation officers which was tailored in khaki with bronze buttons and black mohair rank braid on the sleeves, a uniform which was discontinued in April of 1941, as far as the buttons and the black rank insignia was concerned. It is likely that most Navy aviators simply changed the buttons, removed the black rank braid, and placed shoulder boards on their tunics and continued to wear the uniform after modification. The khaki tunic bears bullion naval aviator wings above a four place sewn ribbon bar which displays the Navy Distinguished Service Medal; the World War I Victory Medal with a single campaign star; the Spanish Campaign Medal; and the French Legion of Honor with rosette. The interior of the tunic retains the label of the Dondero firm in Washington, D.C. The tunic shows a few small subtle spots, but it is without holes or damage and it is in overall excellent condition.
