Butterfly Bomb.

The Butterfly Bomb (or Sprengbombe Dickwandig 2 kg or SD 2) was a German 2-kilogram anti-personnel submunition used by the Luftwaffe which first made an appearance in Britain on a raid on Ipswich in 1940. It was used more widely against targets such as Hull, Grimsby and Cleethorpes during 1943.This example was made in 1942 and is fitted with a type 41 fuze which has a ' Zeit ' ( time ) setting which would detonate the bomb in the air, approximately 5 seconds after being armed. The ' AZ ( Aufschlagzünder - impact ) setting triggers detonation when the bomb hits the ground.This example has clearly been recovered, cleaned and refurbished showing evidence of ( now absent ) corrosion. All protective wings are present with operating springs in good working order with evidence of manufacturing details, codes and inspection marks to various components. Whilst not ' museum ' standard, still a difficult and uncommon item of ordnance to find in any condition
