Description

This original British jacket for German prisoners of war is a WWII uniform piece produced in 1942.The model was manufactured in Great Britain for German POWs held in Allied camps. The jacket is made of coarse grey mottled cotton in a simple, straight cut, featuring a stand collar, front button closure and two patch pockets. Its minimalist finish and use of practical materials reflect wartime shortages and mass production. On the back, the clearly recognizable black diamond-shaped patch is present, which served as a visual identifier of the wearer as a prisoner of war. This marking allowed immediate recognition and was a mandatory feature of prisoner clothing within the British camp system. This jacket is a historical object from around 1942 and illustrates a lesser-known aspect of the Second World War: daily life and organization within POW camps. In total, approximately 370,000–400,000 German soldiers were interned in Great Britain during the war.A remarkable collectible for collectors of Second World War militaria and prisoner-of-war related items.Article number: 18387
