During his deployment to Crete with 10/FJR3 as an Oberjäger and deputy Gruppenführer he and 30 other men were dropped west of Chania near a tented camp (No.7 General Hospital), he was wounded twice and taken prisoner for one week. After recovering, the Battalion was airlifted to the Neva in mid-October 41 to eliminate the Russian bridgehead in Wiborgskaya. During this deployment which lasted over 30 days and involved trench warfare at close range, SASSEN and five men from his Gruppe, cleared an enemy incursion. He was promoted to Feldwebel. After the Battalion was relocated to the Groß-Born training area, where he was presented with the Knights Cross in Berlin. After attending the Berlin-Gatow war school, he took part in operations in the central sector of the Eastern Front as a Zugführer. The next difficult mission took place during the storming of the Knoblauch Heights near Twerdy, Vorberg. He was seriously wounded by grenade fragments, but could not be treated until the evening because a daytime rescue was not possible. The injury resulted in the loss of his left foot (actually he lost his whole leg). He was awarded the DKiG for the night attack at Twerdy. He was then assigned to training tasks, military fitness and administration. Sassen continued his studies after the war and received his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1953. Dr Sassen passed away in 2006 at the age of 88. This photos measures approx. 5 ½ inches (13.97cm) tall and 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) wide. It is in excellent condition. Signed at the bottom in black ink.
