Description

Highly exceptional and extensive Kriegsmarine photo album of the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, compiled by a crew member and containing no fewer than 98 original photographs. The album is bound in a classic black cord-tied cover and forms an impressive and personal period document of one of the most famous German warships of the Second World War.The album provides an exceptionally complete view of life and service aboard the Prinz Eugen, with a unique combination of operational, ceremonial, and personal photography. The photographs show the ship in harbors, on the open sea, and in northern waters, featuring impressive images of gun turrets, torpedo installations, anti-aircraft defenses, signal masts with flags, and dramatic action shots with the ship's guns firing. There are spectacular action photographs showing the Prinz Eugen in combat with the British battleships HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales.Additional images depict spent shell casings on deck after bombardments and various warships in formation and in port. The album also contains numerous photographs of daily life on board. Crew members are seen performing maintenance and painting work, taking part in drills, standing watch, and relaxing on deck and inside the ship.Personal portraits of sailors and officers are included, with binoculars, leather coats, and winter clothing highlighting the operational conditions in which the ship served.A particularly important and remarkable part of the album consists of the many ceremonial and official events on board. There are extensive series showing inspections by senior officers and admirals, crew parades and formations on deck, ceremonies around the ship's bell, and official gatherings with music and audiences. Also included are rare photographs of Cossacks and Eastern Front troops aboard the ship, including demonstrations and performances for the crew, a subject rarely encountered in Kriegsmarine photo albums.Furthermore, the album contains impressive group photographs, gatherings of crew and guests, and images of harbors and surrounding warships, giving the collection a strong documentary character. Together, the photographs form a visual logbook of the ship and her crew, combining operational service with daily life and the ceremonial and propaganda culture of the Kriegsmarine. This album is therefore a highly collectible historical object, offering an exceptionally complete and personal view of the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and her crew during the Second World War.Article number: 18412
