GVR 1st type WW1 Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) & 1914 star trio with original August to November 1914 clasp To- 49980.CPL.A.BURNETT.134/BY.32/BDE.RFA (DCM)49980.GNR.A.BURNETT.R.F.A (1914 Star)& 49980.GNR.A.BURNETT.RA (WW1 Pair)Alfred Burnett from Preston, Lancashire first landed in France 19-8-1914 serving with the 27th brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He was awarded the DCM for services in France & this was published in the London gazette 1-1-1918 with the citation being published in the London gazette 17-4-1918. The citation states.For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty. He displayed great presence of mind in extinguishing a fire in a gun pit, where several hundred rounds of ammunition were stored, his prompt action saving the whole amount, with the exception of four rounds, For over 18 months he displayed exceptional ability, and always carried out his duties with zeal & energy, however difficult the position.By January of 1919 he was at home in Preston & serving as PC 71 in Preston borough police & living at 39 Maudland street.
