Description
Rare original cut-off Luftwaffe cap eagle removed from a wartime M43 field cap of the Hermann Göring Panzer Division. These pieces were commonly taken as souvenirs by Allied soldiers, particularly American veterans, who often cut insignia directly from captured German uniforms and headgear to bring home after the war. Today these 'cut-off' insignia have become a well-established and highly collectible category within militaria collecting, as they represent authentic wartime souvenirs rather than post-war removed badges. The eagle remains attached to the original section of black cap cloth from the M43 field cap, clearly showing the typical factory zig-zag stitching used to attach the insignia to the headgear. The soft, thin black wool fabric is characteristic of Luftwaffe M43 caps. On the reverse the stitching pattern is clearly visible, and an interesting construction detail of the cap itself remains present: part of the seam where two sections of the cap were originally joined is still visible and stitched with the same thread. This is exactly what one would expect from a factory-applied insignia, as the insignia was sewn on using the same thread during production. This example comes from a long-established private collection specializing in cut-off insignia, assembled over many years by a dedicated collector. The collection was recently acquired and several pieces from it are being offered on our website, with this example being one of the highlights. Cut-off Luftwaffe cap insignia from the Hermann Göring formation are considerably scarcer than standard Heer examples and are highly sought after by collectors due to their clear battlefield souvenir character and undeniable authenticity.
