Description

A rare original 1924 period 'Walsall General Hospital badge' in the form of a silver Maltese Cross bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1924 maker's details 'VAUGHTON BIRMM' and inscibed 'MISS C.E.CROSS. ASSISTANT MATRON 1924'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings and blue silk ribbon, housed in its original 'WALSALL GENERAL HOSPITAL case. Height approx 92mm.Mon 9 Mar at 09:40Miss Clara Ethel Cross was born in 1889, she trained at Walsall Hospital from 1913 to 1916 qualifying as a State Registered Nurse. In November 1916 she was appointed a Sister and promoted to Assistant Matron 1920. She was a specialist TB and Maternity Nurse, she is also noted in her records as a qualified cyclist. She was still working at Walsall Hospital in 1928.
