Pewter Beer Stein - 12th SS Panzer Division

An eight-sided pewter half litre beer stein with the name and insignia of the 12th SS Panzer Division - Hitler Jugend - engraved on the front. There are numerous vertical scratches over the legend suggesting there may have been an attempt to scratch it out. The lid has the initials HM in Gothic script with the date May 22, 1937. It is unclear what this refers to as the 12th Panzer Division wasn't formed until 1943. It may have related to the original owner.
