Wounded-in-Action: Jemadar Manraj Gurung, 1st Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles is confirmed having been 'Wounded-in-Action' n May 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres / St. Julien , in Belgium while serving under higher command of the Indian Corps ('A History of the 4th Prince of Wales's Own Gurkha Rifles 1857-1937' (Ranald Macdonell & Marcus Macaulay, 1940), refers). The regimental history of 4 GR, gives the below casualty numbers suffered by 1/4 GR at Second Ypres:- Killed: 1 x BO / 1 x VCO / 44 x GOR's- Wounded: 5 x BO's / 4 x VCO / 192 x GOR's1st Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles (serving with the Sirhind Brigade of the Lahore Duvision, Indian Corps) disembarked in Marseilles, France on 1 December 1914, it's men all-ranks, combatants and non-combatants qualifying for the 1914-15 StarThe recipient Manraj Gurung, by faith a Hindu, was a Magar Gurkha from Western Nepal, holding the Viceroy Commissioned Officer rank of 'Jemadar', while serving with the 1st Battalion 4th Prince of Wales's Own Gurkha Rifles, an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army1/4th Gurkhas subsequently served in the Dardanelles Campaign at Gallipoli in 1915The Indian Army List for January 1916, confirms that Manraj Gurung had enlisted into the British Indian Army on 20 November 1897. On landing in France in December1914, Manraj was not then a VCO, and was first promoted from the ranks on 13 March 1915. Having survived the 'Killing Fields' of France & Flanders, it appears that Jemadar Manraj Gurung subsequently served at Gallipoli, and was discharged sometime after December 1915. His name does not appear in Indian Army Lists in 1917 onwards, so presumably he took his discharge sometime in 1916A very scarce seen confirmed Gurkha Officer's 'Wounded-in-Action' Great War casualty medal for service with the Indian Corps in France & Flanders 1915Condition: VF
