1908 German Medal Made from the Wreckage of the Zeppelin LZ 4

Description

The aluminum medal is approximately 1-1/4 inches in diameter. The medalwas minted from aluminum salvaged from the wreckage of the Zeppelin LZ 4 after it destroyed in a storm at Echterdingen. The medal features an image of a Zeppelin airship flying over a cathedral, commemorating the LZ 4's long-distance flight from Friedrichshafen to Mainz on August 4–5, 1908. The medal bears the statement 'Geprägt aus den Resten des Luftschiffes' ('Minted from the remains of the airship') and '4. u. 5. Aug. 1908' ('August 4 and 5, 1908'), as well as 'Dauerfahrt Friedrichshafen Mainz' ('Long-distance flight Friedrichshafen – Mainz'). The opposite side shows the image of Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The medal was produced to raise funds for the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Company following the accident. The medal shows uncleaned patina.
