Description
From my personal collection: A very attractive and original M42 German steel helmet, factory produced by HKP in size 64, with lot number 2729 stamped in the rear skirt. This example left the factory as a single decal helmet, which is consistent with the database for this lot number. The helmet was later camouflaged during wartime in a striking three-tone pattern, consisting of a beige base layer with green and red-brown striping, often referred to by collectors as the 'Normandy pattern.' The eagmle decal remains clearly visible under the paint. The helmet shows honest field wear, with scratches and natural aging to the camouflage paint, but the overall appearance remains very appealing and untouched. It retains its original liner with untouched and straight split pins, confirming that the liner has never been removed. The liner is a typical war time pigskin example, still complete with its original drawstring. The leather has a darker brown tone, likely due to oiling or greasing, a practice sometimes used by collectors to preserve the material. The helmet is complete with its original chinstrap dated 1943, although the buckle strap appears to be a replacement while the strap itself remains original. The liner band is dated 1940 and sized 56/57, matching the shell size of 64. Sourced from the United States and originating from a personal collection, this is a top-tier and highly desirable camouflage helmet in very nice condition, offering strong display value and collector appeal.
