Description
You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of an ORIGINAL WW2 US Navy F4U-4 Corsair Engine Oil Filler Cap! Originating from a Pratt 7 Whitney R-2800-18W, it come off an aircraft with documented wartime service! The Vought F4U-4 Corsair represented a significant advancement over earlier Corsair variants and entered service in the final phase of World War II. Production began in late 1944, with aircraft being delivered to operational units in early 1945. These aircraft were among the first of the improved Corsair series to reach fleet units and were rapidly integrated into both combat and training roles as the war approached its conclusion. The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 'Double Wasp' was one of the most important and widely used American aircraft engines of World War II. This 18-cylinder, two-row radial engine was designed to deliver high horsepower while maintaining reliability under demanding combat conditions. Introduced in the early 1940s, the R-2800 became a cornerstone of U.S. military aviation and powered a wide range of aircraft across multiple theaters of war.The R-2800-18 variant represents one of the later wartime developments of the Double Wasp series, incorporating improvements in performance and durability as engine technology advanced during the war. These engines were built to withstand extreme operational stresses, including high-output performance, long-duration missions, and harsh environmental conditions. Components associated with these engines reflect the high standards of American wartime manufacturing and engineering, and surviving original parts are increasingly sought after by collectors of WWII aviation material.Made of aluminum, this Oil Filler Cap remains in VERY NICE used condition! It retains clear and well-defined machining and original construction features consistent with use on the Pratt & Whitney R-2800-18 engine. The cap shows expected wear from service and removal, including light surface wear and handling marks, but remains structurally sound with no major damage. I will provide the history of the aircraft this was removed from to the winning bidder.Aone-of-a- kind item, this would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection, display, or restoration project!
