Description

You are bidding on a VERY NICE example of an ORIGINAL WW2 Imperial Japanese Army Type 93 25Γ—80 Spotting Monocular Field set, including the original Yoke, Tripod, Transport Case, and associated components!Japanese Army optical equipment of World War II represents some of the most advanced and well-crafted field instruments of the period, with manufacturers such as Nippon Kogaku (Nikko/Nikon) producing high-quality optics for military use. Large-format observation optics such as the 25Γ—80 monocular were designed for long-range surveillance, artillery spotting, and battlefield observation, providing magnification and clarity necessary for accurate target identification and coordination. These instruments were typically deployed in fixed or semi-fixed positions and required stable mounting systems to function effectively in the field.Unlike standard binoculars, these high-power monocular systems relied on specialized mounting hardware, including heavy-duty tripods and precision yokes, to ensure stability and fine adjustment. The tripod systems used for these optics were often shared across multiple Japanese Army observation instruments, including trench periscopes and large command optics, making them both versatile and critical components of the overall system. The yoke assembly allowed for controlled elevation and directional adjustment, enabling precise tracking and observation over long distances.Complete sets are extremely difficult to find today, as most surviving examples have been separated over time, with tripods and yokes often missing. The mounting hardware in particular is rarely encountered, as these components were heavily used, re-purposed, or lost after the war. As a result, surviving sets that retain their original tripod and yoke assemblies represent a scarce and highly desirable configuration for collectors of Japanese military optics.Made by brass and aluminum by Nikko (Nikon), this militarySpotting Scopeis in VERY NICE used condition! The monocular retains approximately 98% of its original Japanese Army yellow-brown paint, and is serial numbered '1590'. Some marks and wear due to the age but nothing that detracts. The optics are exceptionally clear with no fungus, separation, chips, scratches, or internal debris..however…there is some light haze present…so the winning bidder may want to have them cleaned. The original crosshair reticle is present, and the focus mechanism functions properly (though stiff in some areas). Sadly, the spirit level is cracked and no longer retains fluid, but all other adjustments remain functional!. The eyecup is a postwar brass replacement that sits slightly loose but functions as intended. The mounting posts show minor tape applied by the veteran, likely to improve fit within the yoke. Overall, the monocular remains in VERY NICE condition. The original rubberized canvasTransport Caseis present and complete, retaining all straps except for the missing shoulder strap. The buckles appear to be original, and the case features Kanji ink markings on the front, including the number '1369'; and 'Type 93 Large Type Monocular'. The case remains in very good condition with no loose stitching, cracking, or flaking of the rubberized material, though there is a visible streak of white paint on one side. The interior shows typical wear consistent with use.The VERY RAREYokeis an ORIGINAL WW2 Japanese example manufactured by Nikko/Nikon and is serial numbered '1661'. Made of brass and steel, it retains approximately 98% of its original finish with clear stamps and markings. Mechanically, it is 100% functional, with all movements smooth and all locks intact. There are no repairs, welds, bends, or missing hardware. The Wooden Transport Box appears original and contains the yoke along with additional components, including a spirit level, leather straps, and a secondary mounting attachment. This teardrop mount fits directly onto the monocular, however it features some damaged threads and will not fully tighten (though it does mount and function correctly – see red arrow). The box shows wear from service and storage and has replaced wood screws, as well as a veteran-applied name tag on the exterior. Some small tools and accessories that would have originally been present are now missing.TheTripodis also an ORIGINAL WW2 Japanese example manufactured by Nikko and is serial numbered '1290'. This VERY RARE type is constructed of wood, aluminum, and steel, it retains approximately 98% of its original finish with clear markings. The tripod is fully functional, with all legs extending properly and all clamps intact. It features the correct heavy-duty mounting plate used for this type of yoke as well as for Japanese trench periscopes and other large observation optics (this EXACT tripod also mounts the large Battery Commander Optics). A canvas strap is present for securing the legs.Overall, this is a VERY NICE and complete example of a rare Japanese Army optical support system!
