US Pre Civil War, US Navy M1841 Boarding Cutlass, Ames Mfg.

Original period manufacture. Massive brass fish scale or feather grip with Ames inspector marks on the quillon, JL & RC. American eagle on each side of the pommel. Interesting hand applied rack markings on the top of the guard, four X's and five slashes. The steel blade measures its proper 21 inches in length, with no visible makers markings remaining at this point in time. The double edged blade remains sharp, with scattered shallow nail catchers along it's length, evidence of cleaned corrosion and pitting at the ricasso. Online sources state that 6,600 were produced prior to 1846.
