Its design—a black cross pattée with a white or silver border—originated from the medieval Teutonic Order. Knights wore this emblem since the 13th century. The Iron Cross was more than a decoration. It symbolized the Prussian Army, the Imperial German Army, and the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic. The Wehrmacht used a variant called the Balkenkreuz (bar cross). Today, the Iron Cross serves as the emblem of the Bundeswehr, Germany's current armed forces. Click HERE for more info about the Iron Cross
