It belonged to the first wave of newly created corps, which included XXII to XXVII Reserve Corps and the 43rd to 54th Reserve Divisions, along with the 6th Bavarian Reserve Division. The corps consisted mainly of kriegsfreiwillige (wartime volunteers) who joined voluntarily without waiting for conscription. By the end of the war, the XXVI Reserve Corps remained active.
