Original era manufacture. Of a pattern adopted in 1873, modified in 1887, to identify active and former officers of the GAR. A system of colored backings, ribbon edge colors and emblem placement on the ribbon indicated the wearers status in the GAR. Our example displays a black background to the miniature shoulder strap placed at the top of the ribbon, which, along with the buff edged ribbon, denotes a current serving staff officer at the national level.
