US Indian War 5th Massachusetts Infantry M1872 Officers Kepi

Original era manufacture. Dark blue wool body with an unbound black leather visor and a thin twisted gold wire cord chinstrap, Massachusetts buttons on each side. At the front of the hat is a hand embroidered insignia featuring crossed rifles and the number 5. The hat exhibits considerable moth damage most of it visible on the right side of the hat. Black polished cotton lining showing age and wear, leather sweatband is missing. The 5th Massachusetts was raised in 1834, saw service in the Civil War and was again called to the colors during the Spanish American War of 1898.
