Item DescriptionOriginal Item: Only One Available. This is a fair example of an early Indian War Model 1872 U.S. Army Regulation Kepi worn by a member of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. This U.S. Army Model 1872 Kepi features fabric of dark blue wool broadcloth, with a painted leather visor, Moroccan leather sweatband, with black polished cotton lining in the crown. The crown stands 2 3/4' high at the front, 4 3/4' at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2' in diameter. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the back and stiffened with leather. This example dates to roughly 1885-1890 and is in fair condition with an original leather chinstrap attached at the two buttons. The original leather chinstrap is present, being secured on each side of the cap by a Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War button. There is no maker mark but the now mostly-detached sweatband still retains a size sticker, 7 ¼. The sweatband only retains 20% of its stitching and should be restitched to prevent further deterioration.A nice example of an M1872 kepi.
