Item DescriptionOriginal Item: Only One Available. In 1938, the klappspaten, or foldable spade, appeared, being the precursor of all modern spades of this kind. Including the 1943 American Copy. Production of the Klappspaten was halted mid-war by its high cost and overlong production time. The end-user was of secondary consideration in this type of decision!This is a good service-worn pair of folding shovels. The first example is maker-marked with a logo we could not identify stamped directly onto the blade in the bottom right corner. There is heavy wear but the handle retains its color well. This example has a bakelite tightening nut on the shaft.The second shovel is stamped:B & CO.SOLINGENH40This may denote a date of 1940. This example has a good handle with some scuffs and denting at the pommel.
