Description
Beautiful M40 German helmet, a single decal example produced by SE (Sächsische Emaillierwerke). The shell is size 66, clearly stamped SE66, with a two-digit lot number 90, which is rather uncommon. This is a genuine single decal helmet that was wartime camouflaged in so-called Normandy colors, consisting of tan – beige, green, and reddish-brown spray paint. The camouflage is completely original and shows a very nice, authentic patina with wear consistent with field use, including typical abrasion on the top from being placed on the ground. As was often done by collectors in the 1970s–1990s, part of the camouflage paint on the left side was removed to re-expose the decal, commonly referred to as a 'dugout decal.' As a result, the camouflage on that side is damaged and only a partial decal remains visible, likely because it had already been partially worn off before the camouflage was applied. The opposite side of the helmet, however, remains very attractive, with clearly visible camouflage streaks and a well-preserved pattern. The helmet is complete with an original liner and chinstrap. The liner appears to have been replaced at some point, but it is a correct and fully original example in excellent condition, made of soft leather with the original drawstring still present. The chinstrap is also original, full length, with an aluminum buckle and marked Leonh. Beck, Nürnberg, dated 1940. The chinstrap alone represents significant value. Overall, this is a very appealing and honest camouflage helmet with character, and despite some imperfections, it remains a highly collectible piece.
